New York Knicks Makes History with Two Players Recording Triple-Doubles in a Single Game
Josh Hart and Karl-Anthony Towns made history for the New York Knicks by both achieving triple-doubles in their 128-113 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in New York. This milestone marks the first time in Knicks history that two players on the same team achieved triple-doubles in one game. Hart’s triple-double was his ninth of the season, setting a new record for the Knicks. Previously, he shared the record with Hall of Famer Clyde Frazier, who achieved eight triple-doubles in the 1968-69 season. “I never imagined this. It’s more than I ever dreamed of,” said Hart in a statement from the NBA.
Before last season, the eighth-year player had never recorded a triple-double in his NBA career. Hart finished the game with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists, achieving his triple-double towards the end of the third quarter. Meanwhile, Towns ended the game with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists, securing his triple-double in the middle of the fourth quarter. “Hart has recorded nine this season, while I only have one. He is much better at this,” said Towns, who has achieved a triple-double three times throughout his career. “But the way he does it is special, always with effort and for the team’s benefit. I’m glad the statistics can show his impact in this game.”
The Knicks displayed a collective performance by recording 40 assists out of 53 made shots, even though they were playing without Jalen Brunson due to injury. Hart and Towns started off unselfishly, contributing to the first six made shots by the Knicks with their assists. Meanwhile, the Mavericks played without several key players, including Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Dereck Lively II, P.J. Washington, and Daniel Gafford. The absence of these players made it difficult for Dallas to keep up with the Knicks, who continued to exploit gaps in the opponent’s defense.
Hart recalled watching LeBron James and Lonzo Ball achieve triple-doubles together for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. Now, he experienced the same feeling with Towns. “I was in L.A. when James and Ball did it, and it felt amazing,” said Hart. “Now, I’m in the same situation with Towns, and it feels incredible.”
